Hi, my name is Andy and I have a beautiful wife (Rachael) and amazing son (Tristan) who I love more than anything in this world. I am also the Director of Walnut Tree Leather.
I have always been fascinated with design and working with my hands. As a boy, I would often take things apart to ‘learn’ how they work. This fuelled my love for working, building and creating with my hands. The ability to take a concept and follow it through to the final product is a feeling like none other and makes me feel alive. There is also something special and unique about leather that just captivates me. The rugged and earthiness of it. The smell. The feel. The sound it makes when you roll it out, or the sound it makes when the blade passes through it. It gets me every time.
Life is complicated enough and I genuinely appreciate the simple things in life and I hope that it shows in my work. My designs are purposely very simple and clean whilst being slightly rugged and practical.
There are also a few guiding principles that I hold very dear when it comes to running the business:
- I want to celebrate and support everything that we have and can create on our amazing island. So I do my best to make sure that the suppliers and vendors I buy things from are as local as possible.
- We are traditionally a nation of makers and I want to do everything I can to support that. Even though prices might seem slightly on the higher side, you can rest assured knowing that everything was made in the UK by skilled craftspeople.
- Keeping traditional crafts alive. Once we stop manufacturing something we often lose the specialist knowledge forever. By employing and using traditional methods we ensure that our country’s living heritage is maintained. This isn’t just me saying this. This, the home of cricket, can no longer make hand-stitched leather cricket balls. That skill is officially extinct in the UK.
About Walnut Tree Leather:
Walnut Tree Leather is a small family-owned leather goods maker based in Milton Keynes, North Buckinghamshire. It all started when I bought an expensive genuine leather wallet from a large well-known UK department store. Within a few weeks, the stitching started to come undone on one side. What I found surprised and honestly annoyed me. Inside the wallet between the leather and the lining was several layers of newspaper. I have since discovered that this is a common (mal)practice to make the wallet feel thicker and more expensive.
Having always been a practical person who likes working with my hands I tried my hand at leatherwork in an effort to create my own. The first one, I will be honest, wasn’t very good, but I was absolutely hooked. I loved working with leather and there were so many possibilities to create new items. I progressed to making more and more complicated items. Being a perfectionist at heart it took several years until I actually had a product I was truly happy with. During this time friends and colleagues had all been asking for bespoke and custom items.
It was at this point that Walnut Tree Leather was born. I started the company to lovingly create, by hand, traditional leather goods with timeless style and appeal as well as lasting a lifetime.
What we create:
We currently handmake a classic and timeless range of products including cardholders, wallets, journals and belts. For these, we only use premium full-grain leather which develops the most beautiful patina. This is the hallmark of only the highest quality leathers, which means any product will only get better with age.
Some products are kept in stock but most items are made to order especially for you and once you have placed an order the production will start. Unless stated otherwise, please allow 2-3 weeks for creation and shipping. We often attend the local markets in North Buckinghamshire so if you are free and can pop over then let us know and it would be great to meet you there!
Thank you in advance for visiting our website and if you have bought something we hope you are truly happy with it but if you do have questions or issues, please don’t hesitate to contact us as we want to help.
We do really love a challenge so if you are thinking of having something special made either for yourself as a treat, a special someone or a big day then do get in touch as we would love to help with our bespoke options. Unless we have to order in something rare or precious then we do our very best to keep our bespoke prices in line with our normal prices.
Thank you again,
